Emerging Designers – Let Your Imagination Run Wild
Emerging and professional designers and stylists are called to let their imaginations run wild and take their place in the spotlight at South Africa’s oldest, biggest and richest sprint horseracing event – the Golden Horse Sprint Race Day.
Thrilling horseracing, electrifying entertainment and jaw-dropping fashion explodes to life at the 2014 event at Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday the 24th of May. One of the most highly-anticipated events on mid-KwaZulu-Natal’s social calendar, the Golden Horse Sprint Race Day attracts over 15 000 to the sleepy hollow each year.
Now entrenched as a platform for showcasing the designs and creations of emerging and established designers, the Sprint Race Event features dazzling fashion shows and a Fashion Design Competition.
“Answer the call and enter your design. There are spectacular prizes to be won and you will have the super opportunity to exhibit your talent at what has become one of the region’s most-prestigious horseracing and fashion events,” says Golden Horse’s Marketing Manager, Prabashni Reddy.
The theme for this year’s fashion design competition is “Glamorous Affair”. Designers are urged to step back to an era where dramatic, ground-sweeping dresses, regal gowns and the elegance of satin and lace were the order.
“Combine the elegance and flare of yesterday’s royals and movie stars with the edge and sleekness of today’s socialites. Flaunt your models’ curves with peplum or gorgeous feminine fabrics with slim silhouettes. Let your imagine run wild with bright, bold hues, classic reds or tangerine,” urges Irene Olivier from Pietermaritzburg-based Irene’s Models which is helping to coordinate the Fashion Design Competition.
The over-arching theme of the Golden Horse Sprint Race Day is “Run Wild”. Olivier advises designers to bear this in mind with their designs.
There are five categories in the competition: Best Dressed Person; Most Glamorous Couple; Best Head Gear; Best Young Designer, and Avant-Garde. There is no limit to the number of categories designers can enter.
To register for entry to the competition, designers must arrive at Scottville Racecourse by no later than 09:00 on Saturday the 24th of May. They must meet at the fashion stage area to register and be briefed. Preliminary judging will commence at 09:30.
